Choosing what to wear for a professional headshot

A practical guide to clothing, color and small details that keep the focus on your expression.

A professional headshot is often someone’s first introduction to you. Your clothing should support that introduction without taking attention away from your face. Whether you need a photograph for a company website, a professional profile or your own business, begin with how you want people to feel when they see you.

Dress for the work you do

Consider your audience and the setting in which the photograph will appear. A formal jacket may make sense for one profession, while a simple shirt or relaxed layer may suit another. Aim for a polished version of how you would meet a client or colleague. You should still recognize yourself in the finished photograph.

Choose color with purpose

Solid colors can keep attention on your expression and make it easier to pair the photograph with different website designs. Bring a couple of options if your session allows it. Think about the background as well as your clothing, and discuss both with your photographer. Very fine patterns can sometimes look distracting in a small digital image.

Pay attention to fit

The way clothing sits around your shoulders and neckline matters in a close portrait. Try your outfit while standing and sitting, and check for pulling, bunching or gaps. Press or steam clothes beforehand and transport them on a hanger when possible. Bring a lint roller if you have one, especially for darker fabrics.

Keep familiar details

If you usually wear glasses, include them in the conversation rather than changing your everyday appearance just for the photograph. Keep accessories intentional and choose hair and makeup that feel like you. Small adjustments can be made during the session, so you do not need to worry about having every detail perfect before you arrive.

Tell your photographer where the image will go

A website banner, a profile circle and a printed biography may require different crops. Share any image specifications, brand guidelines or team examples ahead of time. This helps guide the composition and the space around you. Visit the headshot photography page to view examples and discuss what you need.
