What to wear for family portraits

Build a coordinated family wardrobe that feels comfortable, personal and easy to photograph.

Family gathered together for an outdoor portrait

The best family portrait outfits help you feel like yourselves. You do not need everyone dressed identically, and you do not need a completely new wardrobe. Start with the setting, choose a few colors that work together and make comfort part of the plan from the beginning.

Choose a small color palette

Pick two or three complementary colors and let each person wear them in a different way. Ivory, soft blue, warm neutrals and muted rose can work beautifully together, but your own taste should guide the choice. Lay the outfits next to each other so you can see the whole family as one group. Look for balance rather than a perfect match.

Think about the location

An outfit that feels right in a studio may feel different at the beach or among trees. Consider how much walking you will do, where you might sit and whether clothing can move comfortably in the wind. If you are planning portraits around Myrtle Beach or the Grand Strand, discuss the location with your photographer before making final clothing choices.

Let texture do some of the work

Linen, cotton, knitwear and gentle layers can add interest without competing for attention. Small patterns can work, especially when balanced by simpler pieces on other family members. Large logos and busy graphics often become the first thing you notice in a photograph. Choose them only if that is an intentional part of the look you want.

Put comfort first for children

Try outfits on ahead of time and make sure children can sit, walk and move easily. Uncomfortable shoes or itchy fabric can quickly become a distraction. Bring a practical spare outfit when appropriate, along with water and anything your family normally needs for a short outing. Keep expectations gentle and leave time for everyone to settle in.

Check the little details

Empty pockets, check that clothing is clean and bring a brush or comb for a quick refresh. If you wear glasses every day, tell your photographer so they can plan around them. Most of all, choose clothes that allow you to enjoy being together. See the portrait photography page for inspiration and information about planning your family session.
